News Story

Article by: Evan

What was once a great love story, turns out to be a tragic love ending. When Roger Worthington was coming home to Australia from a visit to Venice, Italy, he bumped into a gorgeous young lady in the Australian International Airport named Julia. Almost immediately, the two fell in love. Soon enough they learned that they lived in neighboring towns and their families had worked together in the car industry. The two eventually split up and go to their desired homes. Later in the week Roger and Julia set out for a date to talk about things seeing they are already considering getting married. After the date, Roger brings Julia home to meet his parents and introduce her to them. When they get there, come to find out that Julia is a Robinson, Roger’s parents are furious and he can’t seem to figure out why. When the night ends, Roger brings Julia home. When he returns home, he sits down and Mr. and Mrs. Worthington explain to Roger their feud with the Robinsons. “Those damn knickerbockers extorted money from us!” said Mr. Robinson. They further explained to Roger that the Robinson’s made Mr. Worthington buy 3 cars from him for 15,000. But, the cars were only worth 8,000 dollars but if Mr. Worthington didn’t follow the Robinson’s commands, he threatened to burn down their house. All in all, Roger didn’t care about the family feud; he was still in love with Julia. The next day, Julia called Roger with bad news. “(crying) Roger, we cannot see each other anymore.” Julia says. Mr. Robinson had told Julia that she could not go near Roger and had to marry her ex-boyfriend Cory. Julia and Roger were both distraught they couldn’t be together. Refusing to marry Cory, Julia had a plan. She would buy a liquid that will place her in a coma for a day then wear off. She had planned to take this drink the day of her wedding with Cory. Julia told her brother Carl to tell Roger about the plan and to meet her at the Sydney County Coroner’s Office. When the day came, her parents had thought she passed away so they called the police and she was taken away to the coroner’s office. The next day, Roger had received the news that Julia was dead. Emotionally depressed, Roger felt he could no longer live on without Julia. Roger had never received the information from Carl because Carl as well as Mr. Robinson did not want them to be together. So, Roger contacted the local dealer Willy for some poison that will kill him. “Ayo man, can I get that poisonous stuff you got?” Roger depressingly said to Willy. “Yea mang, no problem, just don’t be stupid with it.” Willy replied. In a bad state of mind, Roger bought the poison off of Willy and drank it back at his house. Meanwhile, Julia was just awakening from her coma and went back home. She called Roger and he wouldn’t pick up. So, Julia snuck over to the Worthington’s to find Roger dead. When she discovered Roger, she was beside herself and felt she couldn’t live on. Julia took a knife, and stabbed herself in her heart. She fell next to Roger and lay bleeding to death. Dead.

Dining Review- Kangaroo Stew

Article by: Eric

When in Australia there are a few things one must do: surf, visit the Sydney Opera House, and eat Kangaroo. Kangaroo comes in a variety of cuts and sizes, but is usually served as a loin or steak. One scrumptious dish, very popular in Australia, is kangaroo tail soup with dumplings. Usually this is a delicious combination of kangaroo meat- either tail or steak, carrots, celery, and onions combined with chopped tomatoes or tomato paste. Then for a flavor, spices range from nutmeg to thyme creating a delectable balance between flavor and texture. While it is cooking one would not believe the aromas surrounding the dish. The meat and any cookingwines added waft up a multitude of heavenly smells.

The preparation of the kangaroo entails, no pun intended, a light browning, usually with the onions. This can either be done in the oven or on a stove. Here, in this first step, the aromas come the life, and climb right out of the pan. The sizzling and that recognizable smell of fresh cooked meat where the blood starts to separate from the meat. Following the cooking of the meat the vegetables and any potatoes and onions, if they haven’t been cooked, get thrown into the pan to the instantly familiar sizzle. These can be sautéed or slowly cooked depending on the recipe. Here the flavors start to animate and one can almost taste the stew as it’s being created. Then, the dish finally starts to come together. You add the meat and any spices/herbs to the veggies and cover with water. In slightly more advanced recipes one can also start by adding port and wine to a soup pot then adding the meat and veggies. The tomato and spices are then added before the stew is simmered.

When the dish is ready the smell will be overwhelming, and the stew will be slowly bubbling. At that point one can serve it in a variety of manners. The stew can be served alone with a light garnish, or as heavily as with potato dumplings and bread. Either way the result is out of this world. The textures and tastes of that first bite will overpower the senses. The texture of the kangaroo is balanced perfectly with the vegetables. And not only will the meal be tasty, but it is good for you. Kangaroo meat is one of the leanest meats there is. The fat content can be as low as 2%. So whether you are looking to get fit, or get happy, kangaroo stew is the meal for you.

In the story the apothecary sold Roger poison. It was illegal for him to sell the poison, and he would have been given the death penalty if he was caught. Also he knew that Roger was going to use the poison to hurt someone but he still sold it to him anyway. Roger did take advantage of the apothecary’s financial trouble, but he still let roger take advantage of him. He let roger kill himself just so he could get some extra money.

The apothecary might have been able to stop roger from killing himself. If he just tried to talk to him about why he wanted the poison then he could of tried to talk him out of it. Instead he just minded his own business and took the money and didn’t bother trying to find out what his poison was being used for.

The apothecary knew what the penalty was for selling poison, (death) but he did it anyway. Now roger is dead and it is partially the apothecary’s fault. So the only rational thing to do would be to give the apothecary the death penalty. Also not enough was being done to stop these apothecaries from selling poison to anybody with money. This apothecary had poison on display for crying out loud. So to make sure that this never happens again the police should be able to do random raids on apothecary store and arrest anyone in possession of poison.

Now there are three dead people (Roger, Julia, and Paris.) All of these deaths could have prevented if it wasn’t for the apothecary. All though this man never killed anybody himself he is still responsible for these deaths. For this reason this man should be given the death penalty. It is definitely the right thing to do.

Interview-Brian (Balthasar)

Article by: Eric

Brian, a fun loving unpresuming guy, and I met on a small corner café during an evening displaying one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. He wasn’t dressed to display his status; he was just being himself and who he wanted to be, not who someone else said he was.

When Brian told his friend Roger, 15 at the time, that his girlfriend Julie he had no idea of the consequences his actions were going to bring. When Brian then found out that Roger had gone on to kill himself Brian was extremely distraught and resolved to always make an effort to brighten peoples days. Today his positive attitude is noticeable as soon as you see him. This kind of attitude is what is needed in today’s high stress, high pace society.

Last week while visiting one of his non-profit organizations dedicated to improving the lives of the impoverished I witnessed something truly spectacular. One of the financial advisors approached Brian with some numbers that didn’t add up. Brian, none the wiser, asked if that could be repeated without all the jargon, as polite as two British women from the eighteenth century. The advisor said basically that they didn’t have the money to continue much longer. As you can imagine this is devastating news, especially for someone who makes it his business to help people. But Brian just took it in stride replying: “Alright, we’ll set up a meeting for tomorrow and brainstorm ways to raise money.”

Brian was born into the wealth of the Montague’s, but he has never let that status get to his head. Even as a child he would wear as normal clothes as his parents would allow. As a teen he went through a short depression following Roger’s death though that eventually led to his current positive mind set. His explanation of this renovation in mind set was that he just wanted the world to be full of people who are basically good. “A good way of doing that is to help them. Whether it’s through an organization or just stopping to help someone bring in their groceries it really doesn’t matter.”

When asked what he hopes to accomplish in the future he took his good time formulating an accurate response. He finally answered: “To help everyone have as much fun in life as I do.” That is the deepest quote I have heard since Albert Camus. That sums up what he’s doing now in my opinion. But when he heard this his face got visibly darker, and he started rattling off lots of statistics about poverty in Australia. His goal is to decrease the unemployment rate from 4.3% to 3%. “But it’s not just about creating jobs. It’s about getting people jobs that they will enjoy. The key is to make sure that they are having fun.”
